Internal and External Identity

In this week's session, students will consider their identities as projected by social media in relation to their internal identities. We will look at artists such as Erin Zerbe (Narcissism 2.0) and Laurel Nakadate (365 Days: A Catalogue of Tears) as we explore the following questions:

Why do people use social media sites? What is their purpose?

Do you feel like a social media portrayal of yourself is an accurate representation of your whole identity? Why or why not?

What do you think the difference is between an internal and external identity? Is this something that has always existed in people or something that has developed because of social media?

How does the invention of social media change or amplify the difference between internal and external identities?
